Padel Let Rules: Replay the Serve or the Point?

A courtside guide to padel lets, net serves and interrupted rallies. Use the decision table and first-serve/second-serve examples to restart correctly.

Quick answer

A net serve that lands legally and avoids the fence before its second bounce is repeated. A second-serve let gives another second serve, not two new attempts. An interruption during a rally is a different decision: if a point let is awarded, the rally is replayed. Identify when the interruption happened before changing the score.

First identify what you are replaying

Three descriptions can sound alike beside a noisy court: the serve touched the net, a player was not ready, or something interrupted an established rally. Start with the event, not with an assumption that every incident means two fresh serves.

The FIP rules separate service replays from point replays and interference. The table is a quick route into those rules. It is not permission to call a let retrospectively after seeing whether your shot wins.

Worked example: a second-serve net

Imagine the score is 30–15. The server misses the first attempt. The second attempt brushes the net, lands in the correct box and then takes its next floor bounce without touching the fence.

The score remains 30–15. The server is still taking a second serve. A simple courtside note would read: score unchanged; second serve to repeat. Do not record a point for either pair and do not reset the attempt count to a first serve.

If that repeated second serve is then a fault, the receiving pair wins the point. The earlier net does not provide a spare attempt after the fault. Say both the score and the remaining attempt aloud before restarting.

Worked example: something interrupts the rally

Now imagine the point has begun and a stray ball enters the playing area. Stop the unsafe situation and raise the interruption immediately. In an officiated match, the umpire determines whether the rules justify replaying the point.

For a point let, cross out the interrupted rally in your notes rather than adding a point and undoing it later from memory. For example, if the rally began at 15–30, the restart is still at 15–30. The next completed point determines the next score.

The official rules distinguish accidental interference from deliberate interference and repeated incidents. A replay is not the automatic outcome of every distraction. Ask for the appropriate ruling rather than agreeing that the loudest caller must be correct.

Agree the restart before touching a score counter

Use a short restart conversation: what was the score, was this a service replay or a point replay, and who serves next? That creates a shared record without needing a lengthy rules debate between every point.

Padel Pointer can record the match on Apple Watch and show the history on iPhone. The app records scoring decisions; it does not decide whether a let should be awarded. Leave the score unchanged until the replay is resolved, then record the next completed point.

  • Keep service attempts separate from points won.
  • Raise an interruption promptly; do not wait for the rally's outcome.
  • For competition disputes, use the event's official rather than an improvised house rule.

Frequently asked questions

Does a second-serve let give me a first serve?

No. A net or let on the second serve repeats the second serve. It does not restore the first attempt.

Is every serve that hits the net a let?

No. Its subsequent path matters. An illegal service landing or fence contact before the second bounce is not rescued simply because the ball touched the net.

Should I add a point when a rally is replayed?

No. Keep the score from the start of the interrupted point and record only the next completed point.
