Americano padel serving order: a 16-point round worked example

Follow a complete 16-point Americano service rotation, count combined points and check serving sides. A worked example with clear organiser-rule boundaries.

Quick answer

In this example, four players complete 16 points in total, with two points served by one player before service passes to the other pair. The order is A1, B1, A2, B2, then repeat. This is one organiser's convention, not a universal FIP Americano rule. Check your event's points per round and service rotation before starting.

Agree the round before deciding who serves

An Americano session needs two different arrangements: who plays together in each round, and how the four players score the round once they reach the court. A tournament schedule handles the first. This guide works through the second.

The PlayAmericano organiser tool describes fixed-total rounds and two-point service turns. We use that convention below. Other events choose different totals and service turns. For example, Suffolk LTA's published Risbygate event description used 24-point rounds. That historical example establishes a variation, not a current event listing or a rule for every club.

Before playing, confirm three things with the organiser: the combined point total, the points each player serves per turn, and how the result enters the standings. Do not copy a 16-point rotation into a 24-point event without checking its instructions.

The complete 16-point service sheet

Name the pairs A1/A2 and B1/B2. For this illustration, A1 serves first and B1 is the first server for the other pair. Each player serves two points per turn. The numbers below identify points played, regardless of who wins them.

The sheet contains eight turns of two points. Each player serves four of the 16 points. This is an arithmetic example built from the stated convention; it is not a measured finding about fairness or player performance.

5–6A2Right, then left
7–8B2Right, then left

Count total points, not the leader's score

A score of 6–4 means ten points have been played. Point 11 is next, so B1 serves under this sheet. At 8–6, fourteen points have been played and B2 serves point 15.

In a fixed-total 16-point round, 9–7 uses all 16 points. It does not mean the winning pair must reach 16. A result of 8–8 also uses the full allocation; check the organiser's instructions for tied rounds rather than invent an extra point on court.

The same arithmetic gives a useful side check for this convention: before a point, an even combined score means the next serve is from the right; an odd combined score means the left. Keep that check separate from identifying the server.

Record the round, then follow the next pairing

Padel Pointer's App Store listing describes Americano Round match setups and configurable points served per turn. Before using it in an event, check that the saved setup matches the organiser's instructions and try a short test round.

Recording your round is separate from generating the whole tournament's partner rotation, assigning courts or calculating the final leaderboard. Follow the organiser's schedule for the next round and submit the agreed result through their chosen process.

  • Have all four players agreed the combined point total?
  • Does the scoring setup use the agreed number of points per service turn?
  • Do both pairs know the first server and service order?
  • Has the organiser explained how to handle a tied round?

Frequently asked questions

Does a 16-point Americano round mean first to sixteen?

Not in the fixed-total convention used here. Sixteen is the combined total: 9–7 or 8–8 both use all sixteen points. Follow your organiser’s instructions for tied rounds.

Who serves after the score reaches 6–4 in this example?

Ten points have been played, so point eleven is next. Under the two-point service-turn sheet, B1 serves that point.

Is this serving order a universal FIP Americano rule?

No. It is a worked example using one organiser’s two-point service-turn convention. Confirm the point total, service turns and result-entry process for your own event.
